Last night on freq 145.2125mhz (V17), we(9W2YED,9W2TLB,9W2SNA,9W2POK) had a discussion on air regarding on RG214 coaxial cable. Special thanks to Talib(9W2TLB) for brought up this matter. Most of us commonly use RG213 and physically saw how it looks like BUT what about RG214.........? What are the differences between RG213 and RG214?
RG213 (right picture) is low loss cable with a non-contaminating jacket.

Outer Diameter: 0.405 inches
Center Conductor: Stranded
Impedance: 50 Ohm
Outer Conductor: Braid
Velocity of Prop. :66%
Jacket: Black PVC-IIA
RG214 (right picture) is low loss cable with double braid and non-contaminating jacket

Just look at it, the only different is the outer conducter (shield) whereby RG214 using dual Braid compared with RG213. I'm not sure the result of using RG214 technically because we're more common to use RG213 and easy to get at open market.

Perhaps someone should look into it, maybe actually use both cables and see the differences technical wise.. There must be a reason why they came up with the double braid.. Probably RG214 provides good isolation when you have more than one cable lying side-by-side.. This is my common sense speaking.. My technical knowledge is almost non-existing... lol :P
Yes, i agree with you, 9W2MIT. But for this cable RG214, it maybe hard to find it in local market, also the price maybe expensive too. Anyone who had experience or technical knowledge on this type of coax, could share with us the information, thanks.
last time got someone selling RG214 at really cheap price. cheaper that RG213. However,even before i can pick up my phone to book, the whole thing was sold out. haiyaahh...
QSL..i got offered to buy this cable but unfortunately i have no budget allocation on the spot..once had it...sold out..:(
well... little late but the main advantage to RG214 is the use of silver instead of bare copper. Supposedly concern at freq>1ghz and corrosion. Silver negates that concern.
I worked for a company making bi-directional repeaters for FM, TETRA/RAKEL, GSM, DCS and UMTS. These repeaters re-radiate off-air signals in tunnels and railway cariages.
The amplifiers have an 80dB gain, which puts heavy requirements on the cables used. Jumpers to feeder cables were ALWAYS RG-214 because of the improved isolation.
The copper shield is also plated and gives a better ground contact at the connector.
A "howling" repeater in a railway carriage can spew out on all bands and block every mobile base is passes.
